In a joint venture, SimplexGrinnell and audio test equipment maker Gold Line will release an analyzer instrument designed to measure the intelligence of voice emergency evacuation systems, and is in compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes.
Called the STI-CIS* Analyzer, the instrument uses the world standard Speech Intelligibility Index (STI) method of measuring speech intelligibility and the Common Intelligibility Scale (CIS) called for in NFPA 72 and other standards. The new intelligibility requirement by NFPA is intended to help ensure that messages from voice evacuation systems can be heard and understood by occupants of a building.
Both companies say the analyzer is subject to patents that are being issued or are pending. The product will be manufactured under license by Gold Line.
Two product versions will be made. Gold Line will manufacture a meter to measure both sound pressure level and speech intelligibility distributed through SimplexGrinnell. A second version of the analyzer with additional functions will be available for consultants and audio contractors directly from Gold Line.
