A First in Kentucky: Sprinklers Required in New Homes

INDIAN HILLS, Ky.
Published: November 5, 2007

The city council in Indian Hills, Ky., has approved an ordinance requiring the installation of residential fire sprinkler systems in all newly constructed homes.

Indian Hills is the first municipality in Kentucky to pass such an ordinance, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

“Although we don’t have a lot of new construction, we do have a number of old structures that are being torn down and replaced with new structures that are much larger,” says Tom Eifler Sr., Indian Hills’ mayor and chairman of the St. Matthew’s Fire Department. “This ordinance sends a message that we care about the lives of our residents and firefighters.”
