A Look at Monoprice’s New Z-Wave Line
Monoprice has launched a new line of affordable Z-Wave home automation prdoucts, including an electronic door lock.

Monoprice, best known for rock-bottom prices on audio/video gear, is launching a line of affordable Z-Wave home automation products.
Indeed, the new products are affordable, but not all of them are the cheapest on the market. The big exception is Monoprice’s Z-Wave electronic door lock (#10798), which retails for $136-a price point that is substantially lower than competitive products, which start at about $190 but generally cost $200 to $300.
Volume pricing for the push-button locks starts at $119, and they come with no Monoprice logo.
Here’s the question: Even if you acknowledge that Monoprice’s commodity offerings are of decent quality, will a cheap door fly with security-conscious consumers?
Besides the lock and other new Z-Wave devices noted below, Monoprice says that we can expect more smart home products coming soon.
According to the press release: “Monoprice also looks forward to continuing its development of additional new products in the home automation category over the coming months and quarters, and suggests that customers check back on our site regularly to learn about upcoming offerings.”
The new Z-Wave products, exhibited (for some strange reason) at Infocomm 2014 are (in Monoprice’s words):
- Z-Wave Electronic Door Lock (Product ID #10798, $136)-This deadbolt lock is a security enabled device, which can be accessed remotely from your smartphone or tablet by using different electronic codes.
- Z-Wave Motion Detector w/ Temperature Sensor (Product ID #10796, $30)-This product uses an infrared sensor sending a Z-Wave signal when motion is detected within its detection range.
- Z-Wave Door and Window Sensor (Product ID #10795, $30) – This sensor sends a Z-Wave signal when the door or window is opened and closed.
- Z-Wave Smoke Detector (Product ID #10797, $54)-This product has an advanced sensor designed to detect smoke, perform pre-programmed tasks, and send a notification to your smartphone or tablet.
As a comparison, you can find Z-Wave door/window sensors online for about $23, but most retail for $35 to $50. You can find combo smoke/CO detectors online for about $60. Aeon Labs Aeotec offers several Z-Wave multi-sensors such as a combo motion/temperature sensor ($57) and a model that monitors motion, light, temperature and humidity ($64).
