Ackerman Security Systems Acquires Impact Systems; Looks to Grow Further

Published: July 11, 2007

Capping four months of discussions, Ackerman Security Systems of Atlanta has acquired Impact Security of Dallas, Ga., and its more than 700 customers.

Mark Floyd, president of Impact Systems, will assume a senior security consultant position with Ackerman.

With more than 40,000 clients, Ackerman is the largest independent company in Atlanta and North Georgia, providing design, sales, installation and monitoring of residential and commercial security systems.

Jim Callahan, Ackerman’s vice president of sales, tells SSI the company is looking to expand further and is currently talking with at least two other companies.

“In 2004, we set in motion a business plan that called for us to double in size by 2009,” he says. The company launched its five-year growth plan with about 28,000 accounts.

While moving strategically to expand its customer base, Callahan says Ackerman will remain firmly rooted in its home turf.

“We are looking for companies that fit our marketing footprint, which is Atlanta,” he says. “We are not necessarily looking to grow into Florida or Alabama or what have you. Our strategic plan is to remain Atlanta-based.”

Ackerman initiated its growth plan in earnest after a leveraged buyout of the company by five members of its management team, including Callahan. The other key players are Bruce Turry, CEO and president; Jeff Cohen, CFO; Bill Rawlings, director of operations; and Mike Sandes, director of commercial sales.

In making preparations for bolstering its customer base, Callahan says the company has beefed up the infrastructure at its UL certified central station and customer service office.

“We’ve done the things you need to do to accommodate the kind of growth we’re looking at,” he says.
