More surveillance cameras are coming to Buckhead, a neighborhood of Atlanta, in lieu of recent home burglaries and car break-ins.
Reporter Newspapers reported additional cameras and vehicle tag readers will be installed in Buckhead and other areas of the city after Buckhead residents raised concerns over safety as a result of three home invasions earlier in the year and more than 100 car break-ins in one week of September.
District 8 Atlanta City Councilwoman Yolanda Adrean said she will set aside $250,000 of her discretionary budget for the security measures, in partnership with the Atlanta Police Foundation. Residents and local businesses will also help fund the cameras and decide their locations.
“The cameras and tag readers won’t solve all our problems, but it’s a step in the right direction,” Adrean said.
In addition, popular outlets Lenox Square and Phipps Plaza will install 235 cameras with the help of its partner Simon, which owns the malls.
“Cameras such as these are increasingly responsible for arrests that otherwise wouldn’t be made,” Councilman Howard Shook said. “I applaud Simon for their civic-mindedness and hope others follow suit.”
