ADT Purchases Smith Alarm, Adds 70,000 Accounts

In late October, ADT Security Services bought Smith Alarm, the largest independent security company based in Dallas, with a number of branches throughout Texas and one in Oklahoma. With this purchase, ADT adds another 70,000 accounts to its client base.

This purchase is the latest in buyouts from ADT. In April 2001, the security company bought South Carolina-based Scana Security and in May attained Cambridge Protection Industries. Edison Security, based in California, was then bought in June.

Smith Alarm originally was to be bought by the SecurityLink division of SBC Communications (the Telecommunications Act at the time prevented companies like SBC from buying alarm companies). However, SBC did not act on the buyout and sold the SecurityLink division in January 2001 to Cambridge Protection Industries, now owned by ADT.
