ADT Security Services Inc. has been tapped by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to help design and develop security solutions for cargo containers entering the Port of New York/New Jersey.
The DHS is conducting a project, called Operation Safe Commerce, that will test new and proven technologies to enhance container security at the nation’s three major load centers: the ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach, New York/New Jersey and Tacoma/Seattle, and ADT has been selected by DHS as one of the participants.
ADT says it will demonstrate at the Port of New York/New Jersey the capability to accurately monitor the end-to-end movement of cargo and containers throughout the global supply chain. Of the more than eight million cargo containers imported into the U.S. in 2002, U.S. Customs was able to inspect approximately two percent.
“This project has significant importance for our nation’s security,” said Mike Snyder, president of ADT Security Services, Inc., in a statement. “More than 90 percent of international trade is carried by sea, and major U.S. ports are responsible for goods valued in the hundreds of billions of dollars.”
