ADT to Secure Washington, D.C., Metrorail Stations
BOCA RATON, Fla.
ADT Security Services will be providing integrated fire, intrusion and access control systems in a majority of Washington, D.C., Metrorail underground stations.
The company was awarded a contract by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) valued at $8.2 million. It will be funded through a $39.1 million grant from the federal government for security enhancements in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
ADT will design, build and install the security systems in Metrorail’s underground stations. WMATA, created by an interstate compact in 1967, oversees the regional transportation system, including Metrorail and Metrobus, for the nation’s capital area.
Today, Metrorail, with 83 stations and 103 miles of track, and Metrobus serve a combined population of 3.4 million within a 1,500-square-mile jurisdiction.
David Couch, director of infrastructural renewal for WMATA, said ADT was selected because the company offered the best integrated security products and programs to meet Metrorail’s needs. “The time was right to upgrade our security technology to a state-of-the- art system that could best assist our transit police force,” Couch said. “With this system, we can pinpoint where an incident occurred down to the exact access point, which allows our officers to respond faster and more efficiently.”
“Security is a top concern for people today, particularly when it comes to mass transportation,” said Jamie Rosand, vice president of commercial sales and marketing for ADT Security Services.
