ADT Partners With LG Electronics, Nest to Enhance Smart Security Footprint
Security giant ADT has formed alliances with LG Electronics to develop and all-in-one smart security devices and Google’s Nest to integrate the Nest Learning Thermostat into ADT’s Pulse platform.
BOCA RATON, Fla. – In its quest to launch a do-it-yourself (DIY), all-in-one smart home security and home automation device, ADT has formed a partnership with consumer electronics giant LG Electronics.
The new product, scheduled to launch later this year, combines ADT professional monitoring and video hosting with a security camera gateway solution. LG’s compact plug-and-play smart security device will contain a variety of sensors and will connect to a consumer’s broadband network, according to the company.
Building on LG advancements in the Internet of Things (IoT), the device can also serve as a central hub for the smart home, enabling users to connect seamlessly to peripheral devices and control them through one centralized mobile app.
“As LG smart technologies help drive the IoT, we see home security and professional monitoring as the connective tissue tying together the smart home,” says Byung-hoon Min, LG Senior Vice President and Head of its Convergence Audio-Video business. “By collaborating with a leader like ADT to create a unique connected home security product, we will deliver best-in-class product innovations and services to consumers.”
The product would compete with offers from startups such as Canary and the Piper product owned by Icontrol Networks, Forbes reports.
ADT executives stated that the firm plans to offer the device to customers on a no-contract basis, hoping that a new generation of consumers might use it to connect to ADT’s services.
But that’s not the only big announcement from ADT. The home security firm has also teamed up with Google’s Nest brand to integrate the Nest Learning Thermostat into ADT’s Pulse home security and home automation ecosystem.

“We believe that bringing LG and Nest into our ecosystem allows ADT to help define the future of home and business security and automation for the millions of customers who rely on our people and systems every day,” ADT President and CEO Naren Gursahaney says. “We see the discipline of Smart Security emerging with ADT leading it – bringing together best-in-class professional monitoring with a curation of premier partners for innovative new solutions. With the continued demand of consumers to leverage automation, we see this as a winning strategy.”
The security giant will continue to develop its Pulse platform, which is based on new Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and technologies developed by ADT. The platform, which is now an open standards-based framework for the secure connected world, will feature services from partners such as Ford Sync, Intel Security, iControl Networks, Life360 and IF (formerly IFTTT).
The firm also plans to release a revamped mobile app this summer as an example of the enhanced Pulse platform’s capabilities. The app will integrate voice authentication and control, into a sleek and stylish new design and navigation scheme, the company says.
