Advanced Security Systems Merges With Northern Calif. Competitor

By Ashley Willis

EUREKA, Calif. — Advanced Security Systems, based here, has merged with Superior Alarms Inc., a local installing security competitor.

With a goal of expanding its footprint in the Northern California region, Advanced Security Systems, a full service security provider, approached Superior Alarms about the deal.

“We looked at Superior’s people, products and history and realized it was a win-win for everyone at both companies and Superior’s customers,” Advanced Security Systems President Chuck Petrusha tells SSI. “Superior’s a quality company with very similar family values and quality care that we give our customers.”

Advanced Security services 60-percent residential and 40-percent commercial accounts. The number of accounts involved in the merger was not disclosed, although they are mostly residential, Petrusha said. Prior to the merger, Superior Alarms used a third-party central station to provide monitoring for its customers.

“As an individual company, Superior didn’t have the numbers [to run its own central station],” Petrusha says. “Three years ago, we started our own central station as a part of our corporate strategy. Last year, we put a sizeable investment in new software and fully redundant, hot swappable equipment everywhere.”

In addition to monitoring services, former Superior Alarms customers will have access to 24-hour on-call technical assistance. They will also receive text and E-mail notification alerts. Petrusha notes that the company offers in-house AutoCAD drafting capabilities, and has the largest staff of fire/life-safety technicians in its region.

“It gives us the power to do both small and large-scale projects,” he says. “With their size, Superior was limited in the scope of projects they could tackle. Now, coupled with our expertise, we can cover any size project in our region.”

Advanced Security Systems has also kept all Superior staff on-board, including owners Marty and Debbie Walker. The company now has roughly 40 employees.

Started in 1971, Advanced Security Systems offers access control, fire/life-safety, intrusion alarm and video surveillance systems to customers. With three locations, the company has acquired other companies in the past year. Petrusha hopes to add a few more acquisitions soon.

“We’re not looking to go nationwide,” he says. “We’re looking to cover the Northern California and Southern Oregon marketplace.
