Police departments in Trussville, Leeds and Birmingham
received grants from the U.S. Justice Department through
the COPS Secure our Schools program. Metal detectors,
cameras and locks will be installed as security measures in
schools. The matching grants will pay up to 50 percent of
the cost of installation.
Trussville Police Department received its first award and the largest Secure our Schools grant awarded to a department in the state this year. The department was given $88,746. The Birmingham Police Department was awarded $50,000 and the Leeds Police Department received $5,650.
“This will not be a camera in every classroom,” says Trussville’s Police Chief Don Sively. “This is a basic monitoring system.” Cameras will be placed on the interior and exterior of the schools, according to Sively.
