An alarm company in Maine will be installing a video security system for a popular waterfront. Northeast Burglar and Fire Alarm Co. of Bangor, Maine, will install four security cameras at the nearby Northeast Harbor marina in Mount Desert.
The town’s leadership approved on Feb. 10 $11,250 for the installation according to the Bangor Daily News. The funds will come out of a homeland security grant from the Maine Emergency Management Agency.
The cameras will be used to watch the entry and exit of visitors to the harbor’s docks. State officials have been concerned that the harbor could be used as a staging point for attacks on cruise ship ports in nearby Bar Harbor. Northeast Harbor is also used recreationally by current and former government officials.
The cameras will also serve to help prevent a recent string of lobster-catch thefts. During the past year, 300-400 pounds of lobster have been stolen from fisherman who left out their lobster crates.
According to the Daily News, . Northeast Burglar and Fire Alarm was one of several companies contacted about bidding on the job but was the only company to submit an estimate and discuss the project with town officials.
