At least 20 homes have been burglarized since September, reports the Lafayette Daily Advertiser. A few of the homes had alarm systems, but most of them were easy for the burglar to enter and exit with small items, such as jewelry, according to police. Authorities believe the same person is responsible for all the burglaries.
“Most criminals are going to go after easier houses, and obviously it’s easier to break into a residence that doesn’t have one [an alarm system],” says Lt. Craig Stansbury, spokesman for the Layafette Parish Sheriff’s Office. It is extremely rare that a home with an alarm system is actually targeted by criminals, according to Stansbury.
“Nothing’s 100 percent, but I know very few cases where people have ‘disabled’ an alarm system to break into a house,” says Stansbury. “That’s the 1 to 2 percent that would ever happen. I can’t even remember one in Lafayette in 22 years.”
