Online provider America Online (AOL) has announced it is entering the local telephone market by offering voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) service. AOL says it will offer VoIP to its 22.2 million subscribers this month and to nonsubscribers after that.
VoIP stands to affect the alarm industry because of compatibility issues VoIP services may have with alarm systems.
The Los Angeles Times also reports that Internet companies Yahoo and Google are also considering whether they will offer VoIP service.
