ASIS Int’l announces it will begin actively contributing to the development of professional standards in the security arena, marking a significant change in the focus of its former Commission on Guidelines.
Coinciding with the new mission to partner in standards initiatives, ASIS Board of Directors approved a name change for the former commission, which was launched in 2001 to bolster the effectiveness and productivity of industry best practices.
“The Commission will continue to publish guidelines both in support of standards as well as independently on important issues in security that may not lend themselves to the creation of standards,” says Mark Geraci, chairman of the newly named ASIS Commission on Standards and Guidelines.
ASIS says it is establishing strategic relationships with national, regional and international standards bodies to provide a voice for security professionals in the standards development arena and to co-author standards of importance to the profession.
In the United States, ASIS says it will also continue to play an important role in coordinating with both the Congress and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to ensure the expertise of its 35,000 members is included in the standards development processes that are currently in progress.
ASIS has become a member of the American National Standards Institute’s Homeland Security Standards Panel (ANSI-HSSP) that is assisting DHS in the development and adoption of consensus standards critical to homeland security in the U.S.
“Only by driving the process can we assure that the interests of the security executive will be reflected in international standards,” Geraci says.
