ASIS to Create Standard to Improve Private Security Performance

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A new contract from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) will allow ASIS Int’l to develop an ANSI standard for quality assurance management systems for private sector security organizations.

The standard, titled Management System for Quality of Private Security Company Operations — Requirements with Guidance, will build off the Int’l Code of Conduct for Private Security Service Providers (ICoC) and Montreux Document. The standard will assure compliance to legal duties and best practices for private military and security companies in conditions where the rule of law has been undermined by conflict or disaster.

“Private security service providers are critical elements for supporting peace and stability in regions that have overwhelmed by disruptive events,” says Dr. Marc Siege, chair of private security company operations, ASIS. “This global initiative will codify benchmarks for best practices. It will be consistent with the goals of assuring quality of services and respect for human and civil rights.”

After the House passed H.R. 5136, which calls for standards and certification of private security service providers, the DoD reached out to ASIS. In January, President Obama signed P.L. 111-383, The Ike Skelton National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2011, which included a requirement for standards and third-party certification for private security service providers.

ASIS has issued a call for participation to form the standards committee. Applications are due by March 30. For more information, visit www.asisonline.org.
