Alejandra St. Guillen, the sister of slain New York City graduate student Imette St. Guillen, recently visited the state Capitol to press for two laws that will effectively increase security in bars.
Democratic Assemblyman Felix Ortiz is sponsoring “Imette’s law,” which would mandate the installation of security cameras at the entrances of all establishments with liquor licenses.
Another bill sponsored by Ortiz, named after Christopher O’Connor, who was killed at a Queens nightclub in 1987, would mandate background checks for bouncers and require a training course. Bar owners and managers could face charges for any criminal act performed by an employee with a criminal record.
