ATLANTA — A double shooting in February has prompted Atlanta police to start monitoring Georgia State University’s 253 video surveillance cameras.
The university’s cameras have been integrated with the Atlanta Police Department’s Operation Shield Video Integration Center, as reported by WABE, Atlanta’s NPR Station. The center already has 6,000 surveillance cameras integrated.
The partnership will improve security on campus and help police solve crimes more quickly while also responding to incidents on campus in a more timely fashion, Police Chief George Turner said.
GSU President Mark Becker said more surveillance cameras will be coming to the university.
The integration of surveillance cameras in Atlanta with the APD has received some praise, including from Indianapolis, which wants to model its own surveillance program after Atlanta’s.
