Audit Shows Flaws in NYFD’s Fire Alarm System

NEW YORK
Published: July 22, 2009

The fire alarm system used by New York’s fire department has been insufficiently tracking and inspecting alarms that are not up to code, according to a city comptroller audit.

The system, which consists of a self-certification process, was deemed vulnerable to corruption and a danger to the public, according to a report in the The New York Post.

The FDNY inspection unit gave property owners 90 days to update their system to meet code requirements after being issued a letter of defect. However, according to the audit, many defect systems were given self-certifications without actually being fixed.

The FDNY unit approved 1,139 self-certifications in 2008. When 57 certifications were re-inspected, 27 of them still failed, according to the news report.
