Ballparks Put Security On Deck

LOS ANGELES
Published: May 9, 2005

An increase in violence and other fan misbehavior is spurring a greater awareness of security at two of America’s most famous ballparks. Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, and Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles are beefing up security with both teams hiring uniformed city police officers to patrol the stands.

In addition, the Dodgers have created a director of security position who will look at upgrading security at the home of the Dodgers, according to the Associated Press.

Fenway Park was recently the site of a scuffle between a fan and New York Yankees outfielder Gary Sheffield, while Dodger Stadium has seen a general increase in fan misbehavior this season including fights in the stands, seats being ripped out and fans running on to the field – especially during the “$2 Ticket True Blue Tuesday” promotion.

The Chicago White Sox recently upgraded the video security at their home ballpark, U.S. Cellular Field. An exclusive report on the installation at the former Comiskey Park is detailed in the December 2004 issue of Security Sales & Integration.
