Bankers Cite Security as Reason Robbers Should Stay Away

The Oklahoma Bankers Association (OBA) is launching a new drive to remind potential robbers that because of high security and a lack of on-site money at banks, it’s not the smartest financial move to rob a bank. The OBA says that banks don’t keep a great deal of money on hand, and it’s almost a foregone conclusion that because of modern surveillance almost every robber gets caught.

Elaine Dodd, vice president of fraud training for the OBA, told The Journal Record that 75 percent of bank robbers are caught within 18 months. “Think about it. You go into a bank, you’re caught on camera. Your picture ends up on every news station in town. The OBA and other agencies are offering thousands of dollars for tips that will lead to your whereabouts,” Dodd says. “You don’t walk away with much money. When you’re caught, you are charged with a federal crime. Does that sound ‘worth it’ to you?”
