Big Data, bring your own device (BYOD), new electronic security market entrants and more were hot topics during “The Great Debate 2014: Use It or Lose It!” keynote address at ISC West 2014.

A standing-room only crowd listened intently as Axis Communications‘ Fredrik Nilsson, Brivo‘s Steve Van Till and Tyco Integrated Security‘s Jay Hauhn discussed the onslaught of new technologies and associated issues, challenges and opportunities.

Here are some highlights from the keynote address:

Big Data – This is going to continue to grow, but with it raises the debate over privacy and striking a balance between actionable intelligence and checks and balances to avoid abuse and protect people’s rights. Crowd-sourcing of video and social media will continue to play a larger role in the fabric of security.

Growth Drivers – Security leveraging data for other purposes, and demonstrating how automating tasks can achieve superior results to humans and pave the way toward realizing situational awareness.

Internet of Things – This is definitely coming on fast but it is likely to elevate vulnerability to hackers. Single simple user interfaces was cited as being critical. And there is the question of whether the security industry will seize all the opportunities this will bring or leave it to others.

New Market Entrants – The influx of telcos, cablecos and others is seen as a positive because it will raise market awareness and the competition will drive innovation. They are already here and becoming part of security’s collective “us.”

BYOD – This was called a slippery slope to navigate as organizations attempt to balance employees using personal devices for work and not making them too restrictive while at the same time adhering to organizational security protocols.
