Police in Boise, Idaho, have urged the city’s council to increase fines for false alarms and also implement a form of enhanced call verification (ECV) where alarm companies will need to do more to confirm and actual crime is taking place.
According to television station KTVB, Boise Police Chief Mike Kasterson told the council during its May 9 meeting that 99 percent of the more than 4,000 burglar alarm calls they responded to last year were false.
Kasterson said that after one “free” false alarm in a calendar year, a resident should be fined $50 for a second false alarm, $75 for a third, $100 for a fourth and $200 for each false alarm after that.
The council will consider the request within the next month.
