Boyd & Associates Expands Alarm Response Services With Acquisition

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Full-service security company Boyd & Associates has added 5,000 accounts to its customer base with the acquisition of Draganchuk Alarm Services. Terms of the deal were not released.

Half of the acquired accounts are residential, while the remainder includes commercial, retail and light industrial clients. The deal brings Boyd & Associates’ total account base to 15,000. It also adds more than 50 salespeople, technicians and patrol officers to the firm’s workforce, bringing the total employee count to 120.

By acquiring Ventura, Calif.-based Draganchuk, Boyd & Associates can expand its presence in the alarm verification and patrol services field. For more than 20 years, Draganchuk has provided alarm system installation throughout the Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. As a complement to the business, Mark Draganchuk, the firm’s owner, started Draganchuk Security and Patrol in 2011, which provided alarm response, vacation watch and sentry services to its clientele.

That appealed to Boyd & Associates, as the firm wanted to provide more alarm response services to its clientele, company President Dan Boyd tells SSI.

“Until four months ago, Boyd & Associates was a big, regional private security guard and patrol firm,” he explains. “We must have had close to 700 security officers. But we decided as part of our strategic plan to move away from the manned guarding business and move towards the electronic side of security.”

Started in 1967, Boyd & Associates provided alarm and guard services to homeowners associations (HOAs), businesses and gated communities throughout the Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside Counties in Southern California. Throughout the years, Boyd found that his customers were relying more on electronic security technology, such as intrusion alarms and access control, rather than standing guard services. So, the firm, which also operates its own central station out of its North Hollywood, Calif.-based headquarters, decided to concentrate on the installation and monitoring side of its business.

Although Boyd & Associates divested from its standing guard division, the company still operates its patrol business, as more law enforcement agencies stop responding to unverified alarm calls.

“We feel it’s important because municipalities all around Southern California and the United States are more and more hesitant to respond to false alarms — and they should be,” Boyd says. “We think that this alarm response concept where we send a patrol vehicle to investigate the alarm signal is one of the ways that alarm companies are going to grow and prosper in the future.”

Boyd & Associates will use Draganchuk’s 20-vehicle fleet to expand its alarm response division, as the firm keeps vehicles on the street to verify alarms. Additionally, Draganchuck customers will have the option to upgrade to interactive video monitoring and CCTV coverage.

Because of its popularity in Ventura County, Draganchuk will keep its name in that market.
