SACRAMENTO—Fire and life-safety system technicians in California with a C-10 license are that much closer to being required to be certified in order to work in the state. In early May, the state Senate passed Assembly Bill 1087, which requires California electricians to either take a certification test or complete a state-approved apprenticeship program in order to be certified by the Department of Industrial Relations.
At press time, the bill was being sent to the California Assembly for passage. If passed, the bill will be sent to Gov. Gray Davis for approval.
The Western Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (WBFAA) has been following this legislation and has set the curriculum for fire and life safety. The association’s curriculum is pending approval.
“I am personally for this bill because it will help entice people to enter the security industry career path,” says George Gunning, past president of the California Alarm Association (CAA).
