Caught on CCTV: Looters Raid Local Sports Store During Baltimore Riots

Surveillance footage show individuals ransacking the Sports Mart store in Baltimore’s Mondawmin Mall.

BALTIMORE – Video surveillance footage has emerged of looters raiding a sports store in the Mondawmin Mall during Monday’s riots in Baltimore.

The video shows a nonstop rush of young men and women scooping up anything in sight, including top name brand items, and completely ransacking the Sports Mart store, CBS Baltimore reports.

Additionally, the looters carried out a safe that was in the corner of the store.

The rioting broke out April 27 in response to the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died with a spinal injury a week after police took him into custody. The revolt initially started out as a peaceful protest before it became violent.

In a press conference on April 27, President Barack Obama slammed the rioting, stating that the violence is counterproductive.

“When individuals get crowbars and star prying open doors to loot, they’re not protesting,” he said. “They’re not making a statement. They’re stealing. When they burn down a building, they are committing arson, and they are destroying and undermining businesses and opportunities in their own communities that robbed jobs and opportunities from people in that area.”

The owners of 35-year-old family-owned Sports Mart know this firsthand, as the owners Brian and Harvey Levy state that 11 individuals who worked at the store are now unemployed due to the looting.

It is unclear if the owners plan to reopen the store.

And since the Mondawmin Mall is currently closed, businesses that were not destroyed are also losing money.

Police have arrested more than 200 people following Monday’s riots. More than 20 police officers were injured, six of them seriously, USA Today reports.
