CCTV Footage Helps ID Possible Bombers in London Terror Attacks

LONDON

Investigators used CCTV security video to identify what they say are the four suicide bombers for a collection of bombings that crippled the transit system in Great Britain’s capital. London’s Metropolitan Police is still poring over more than 2,500 tapes recorded off public and private video surveillance videos hoping to find further clues into the terrorist attack.

The Associated Press says the footage was recorded off systems that belong to London transportation and public safety agencies, as well as some private CCTV systems located near the site of a blast that ripped the roof off one of London’s double-decked buses. London, and Great Britain in general, has an extensive public CCTV system with cameras monitoring streets, trains and buses.

Simultaneous terrorist bombings in three subway trains and one bus killed at least 52 people on July 7. Authorities have been trying to track down those responsible, with some arrests made July 12.

The Daily Mail of London reports the CCTV video helped authorities determine that the acts were conducted by four suicide bombers with explosives apparently hidden in their backpacks. All of the suspected terrorists have been identified as well-off, British-born and raised Muslims, including the father of a 5-month-old baby and a 19-year-old.

Scotland Yard says the four are seen in CCTV video taken at 8:30 a.m. local time July 7, casually dressed and leaving a train at the King’s Cross station – near the tunnel where one of the bombings took place 20 minutes later.

“All of the men look completely normal,” an anonymous police source told the Mail “They are dressed in casual clothes with big rucksacks on their backs and look for all the world like four men who are off on a backpacking holiday, instead of four mass murderers on the last leg of their mission.”
