Police officers using CCTV have dual roles in many jurisdictions. Eighty-one percent of police departments use numeric records to store and track videotapes; 57 percent record over tapes one to 10 times before discarding them, and 71 percent store tapes for more than 30 days.
Interestingly, while agencies using CCTV strive to comply with state and local laws, they do not always provide those operating the equipment with training on its use, and the liabilities associated with it. Eighty percent of agencies that responded to the survey use CCTV; about 66 percent of those agencies have been using CCTV for more than five years.

The use of CCTV equipment in law enforcement has had a huge impact in the past decade. Many agencies are applying CCTV technology to various police operations—especially equipping vehicles with video recorders—such as monitoring public areas, record booking, and other procedures. These results are based on responses from more than 200 law enforcement agencies.
