COLUMBUS, Miss. — City officials here are considering suing Knight Hawk Security after discovering several surveillance cameras installed by the locally based firm are ineffective at night.
Knight Hawk installed 12 cameras along the Columbus Riverwalk park and nature trail in September 2010 at a cost of about $18,000, reports The Commercial Dispatch. However, in July, police discovered the resolution of some cameras was too low at night to be of any use.
Knight Hawk Security maintains the cameras do operate correctly and that there is no basis for a refund. Karen Johnston, a representative for the company, stated that the cause of low picture quality is the result of poor lighting, according to the newspaper. She added that Knight Hawk told city officials that they would need better lighting for the cameras prior to installation in both writing and by word of mouth. The city, however, did not ask the integrator to install any lighting, Johnston says.
City officials maintain they were told that the current lighting would be adequate for the cameras to work properly. The issue has since been turned over to city attorney Jeff Turnage for review and possible litigation.
