COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Columbia City Council has approved spending $620,000 to add more security cameras throughout the city.

The city currently has multiple cameras located throughout hospitality districts, which local police credit for helping to track down suspects in multiple crimes. Since those cameras have been beneficial, law enforcement wanted to add more cameras to increase security, WLTX.com reports.

The city has selected Statewide Security Systems to install the cameras because the firm already operates most of the recording devices in the city.

Unlike the current arrangement, the municipality would own the images crated by the devices.
