New York City police officials are expressing concerns over the perimeter security for the new 1,776-foot skyscraper that is being built on the site of the destroyed World Trade Center. Police are concerned that the new Freedom Tower is being built too close to the street, leaving little room for perimeter protection according to a report in the New York Sun.
A board member of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation – which is supervising the reconstruction of the main site of the 9/11 attacks – says police expressed to her concerns about the building being 25 feet from the street, instead of the preferred 50 feet. Madelyne Wils told the Sun police were concerned that would make it susceptible to a roadside bomb similar to the one that brought down the federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995.
Wils says the solution will likely be to move the nearby roadway to create a larger buffer zone.
