Residents and businesses in New Britain, Conn., now have a little longer to register their burglar and fire alarms with the city. New Britain’s Common Council voted Dec. 10 extend the deadline to register alarm systems for free with the New Britain Police Department to Feb. 29.
In March, the Common Council passed a new alarm ordinance to impose fees on false alarms, and needed a registry of the alarms to do so. However, Jim Donnelly, public safety telecommunications director, told the New Britain Herald that of the estimated 6,000 alarm systems in the city, there have been only 100 registrations.
Donnelly says 95 percent of the approximately 70,000 alarms responded to per year are false. Residents and businesses are charged a $50 fee for a second false alarm and $80 for each one after that.
