Commissioners in Washington County, Md., are considering levying fines for false alarms at homes and businesses.
The sheriff’s office says nearly all of the building alarms investigated last year were false. Only 22 out of 3,600 alarms were considered legitimate, the Associated Press reports.
The proposed ordinance would allow two false alarms at an address in a single year. A third would result in a $30 fine for a homeowner or a $50 fine for a business. Additional false alarms would result in fines of $45 and $75. The ordinance would also require permits for alarm systems installers.
A hearing on the proposal is set for September 11th.
