The murder of judge in an Atlanta courthouse March 11 and
the February killing of a federal judge’s husband and
mother are forcing courthouses around the country to look
at their security. Despite the strengthened security in
many courtrooms that came after the 9/11 attacks, most of
the nation’s 3,087 counties use only sheriff’s deputies to
guard their courthouses according to the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
“We are all vulnerable and there is no way to be absolutely
secure, but surely there are things we can do to improve
the situation,” Gibbs Flanders, president of the Georgia
Council of Superior Court Judges, told the Journal-
Constitution.
Flanders also suggests minimum standards of security should
be established for state and local court buildings.
