CoVi Introduces New Way to View Network Video

Published: April 30, 2005

AUSTIN, Texas — In a sneak preview provided to Security Sales & Integration, at its headquarters, CoVi Technologies Inc. unveiled a networked video security system that makes a drastic departure from the typical networked system architecture.

The Crystal HD™ surveillance system features a layout where storage is at the camera end of the system, rather than at the other end of the network. The end result, according to CoVi, is video that doesn’t go down with the network, takes up much less bandwidth and has a much higher image quality than many systems.

Barry Walker, CoVi’s president and CEO, says the Crystal HD system is the reason the video systems manufacturer came into existence in 2002.

“We feel the work being done here is very important,” says Walker. “When you’re watching the 11 o’clock news and seeing surveillance video of someone and you can’t see who they are is frustrating. Quality always wins.”

Most systems have the camera feed video through a network link to storage at the end through a network video recorder (NVR) or PC hard drive. The Crystal HD system architecture puts storage right next to the camera itself, then sends it out through the network to a monitor at the end of the network.

“If the limitation to improving the quality of video is transport, we’ve solved that problem,” Walker says.
