The Central Station Alarm Association’s (CSAA) Insurance Industry Liaison Committee, UL and Inland Marine Underwriters Association (IMUA) are working together toward establishing a framework for underwriting guidelines for alarm systems. The three organizations held a meeting to discuss the insurance industry’s need for higher levels of service and coverage and to educate underwriters and loss prevention professionals as to the types of protection that should be required by insurance companies to meet applicable codes and standards, as well as UL and CSAA recommendations.
The group decided on a number of initial action items aimed at raising the levels of burglar and fire alarm protection. Among them:
- 1. IMUA will feature burglar and fire alarm issues on its Web site.
- 2. IMUA and CSAA will establish a link on their website to the UL “Alarm Finder” Web site.
- 3. CSAA will update the “Guide to Understanding Burglar Alarm Systems” and the “Guide to Understanding Fire Alarms Systems” for distribution to IMUA members.
- 4. UL has initiated a program to enforce the standards for certificated systems. If a certificated system is not up to UL standards, the certificate may be suspended or the central station’s listing may be suspended or revoked.
