Surveillance cameras are scheduled to be installed in
Dallas’ Deep Ellum district by the Dallas Police
Department. Crime in that area is already down 12 percent
from 2003, but police are still looking to reduce it even
further and enhance security.
Dallas police, along with the Deep Ellum Association, will be using a 90-day trial of equipment provided by Virtual Surveillance of Plano. Virtual Surveillance has already installed 16 cameras to monitor sidewalks, streets and alleys. The new program is entitled “Community Links.” Carol Van Zandt Jones of Virtual Surveillance developed the program to use a Web interface to link the cameras to the local police department.
Three clubs in the Deep Ellum district have volunteered to have cameras installed on their buildings. Through real-time remote systems from computers and PDAs, police will have access to the cameras.
