Dallas police are about to receive some help stopping crime in the city’s downtown area thanks to a public CCTV system being funded by a philanthropic organization. City officials expect to install 34 cameras in the Central Business District and the West End thanks to a $840,000 grant from the Meadows Foundation.
According to the Dallas Morning News, surveillance cameras were used last year in the Deep Ellum area of Dallas in a joint public/private experiment where they were placed on the rooftops of several businesses to monitor rowdy crowds. Police Chief David Kunkle adds that these cameras were an important tool in the fight against crime in this section of the city.
Last year, Deep Ellum saw a drop in crime rate of 9 percent, with violent crime down 36 percent.
