The Alarm Industry Communications Committee (AICC) is
soliciting data from alarm monitoring stations’ digital
communicators to determine compatibility with Voice over
Internet Protocol (VoIP). The AICC will use the data in
partnership with representatives from major cable companies
to assure that all digital alarm transmissions are
forwarded swiftly and accurately through VoIP.
Lou Fiore, AICC chairman, recently held a meeting with
cable, cable modem and alarm industry representatives at
the Louisville, Colo., headquarters of CableLabs – a cable
industry partnership that promotes technical advancements.
The parties discussed transmission issues surrounding VoIP –
which has the potential
to interfere
with alarm signals – and
tried to set a framework for working together to resolve
those issues.
The representatives agreed to test digital communicator
formats, and the data solicited from alarm monitors will be
used for this test.
AICC is seeking data from central station operators on
which digital communicator formats are being used and how
many accounts are using each format. The AICC says the data
will be kept confidential. The survey form is available at
the
Central Station Alarm Association’s Web site and needs
to be faxed to (703) 242-4675 by April 1.
The AICC consists of representatives from the CSAA,
Security Industry Association (SIA) and Security Network of
America (SNA), as well as members from Honeywell Security
