DERBYSHIRE POLICE ADOPT FACEIT®-ENABLED DATABASE SYSTEM

Visionics Corp. and its U.K. business partner, ABM U.K., announce that the Derbyshire Police have adopted a FaceIt®-enabled law-enforcement database system. The centralized network system has been designed around a new crime-fighting initiative in central England called Operation Liberal, which encompasses seven other regional police forces – Cambridgeshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and the West Midlands. Operation Liberal targets so-called distraction thieves who usually prey on the elderly and disabled, acting in teams to divert attention from the victim. Additionally, they travel large distances and use high-speed road links to move around in an effort to make detection and capture more difficult for police. The operation is funded by the Home Office through a two-year pilot project, in conjunction with the National Crime Squad and National Criminal Intelligence Service. If judged successful, the database system will be opened up to the entire nation. Detective Inspector Pat Parry of the Derbyshire Police says, “Crime families tend to evade detection by moving around frequently and assuming multiple identities. This system will greatly assist our efforts in tracking these criminals across the region and in identifying potential suspects.”
