WASHINGTON —The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announces its proposed rules for Real ID, which include an agreement it made with Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) to give states more time to implement the new regulations, and to reestablish a rulemaking committee.
States have until Dec. 31, 2009 (a two-year extension) to comply with Real ID, an act aimed at assisting law enforcement and counterterrorism authorities to detect documents, such as driver’s licenses, that have been falsified. Without the extension, states would have been required to be in full compliance by May 2008.
The rulemaking committee, originally created by Senator Collins, will be comprised of federal officials, state officials and representatives from other interested parties to provide comment to DHS on the proposed regulations.
