ESA Grants $10K in Scholarships to Children of Firefighters

IRVING, Texas — The Electronic Security Association (ESA) bestowed a total of $10,000 in scholarship money to two children of firefighters through its annual Youth Scholarship Program.

Each year, ESA chooses the recipients based on a combination of academic achievement, national test scores, extracurricular participation and an essay competition.

Brian Roxas of La Crescenta, Calif., whose stepfather is a firefighter in Los Angeles County, earned the $7,500 top prize. To qualify for the award, Roxas had to win the California Alarm Association Youth Scholarship Program. He competed against 235 students to receive a $2,500 scholarship from the chapter.

Kirstyn Hein of Pinckney, Mich., took home the $2,500 second place prize. Hein’s father is a member of the Ann Arbor Fire Department. Because there is no ESA chapter in Hein’s area, she applied directly to ESA along with 100 other students. Selected as the ESA national nominee, Hein’s was initially awarded $1,000. This marks the first time that a student residing in a state without an ESA chapter has received one of the national awards.

“This year’s competition was the closest in history,” says Dave Simon, ESA Scholarship Taskforce chair. “Unfortunately, we can only award two scholarships, and I can’t say that we’ve ever had two better candidates than these. The essays, along with the quality of each applicant’s background, show how police and fire officials across the country are positive role models for the next generation.”

As many as 15 chapters participated in the scholarship program. This year, ESA awarded $47,500 in scholarships to 38 students across the nation. Since its inception 1996, the association and its affiliated state chapters have awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships.
