MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The city council here has approved the second reading of an ordinance to change provisions for repeated false alarms.
According to Memphis police, the city receives approximately 97,000 alarm calls annually. Of those only 900 are valid emergencies. If the ordinance receives approval, the city would place repeat offenders on a Do Not Respond list after their seventh false alarm. Alarm owners would face a $90 fine for every hour of manpower, WMCTV.com reports.
Those on the Do Not Respond list would also have the ability to appeal for reinstatement through the city’s alarm office.
