GREENWOOD, Ind. — The city council here has approved an ordinance to help combat false alarms, Fox 59 News reports.
Since 1998, Greenwood Police Department officers have responded to more than 34,000 false alarms, with only 168 being actual alarms. Each time an officer is sent to an alarm call, it costs $100,000, funds that city officials believes could be used elsewhere, Fox 59 News reports.
Under the new ordinance, which is still awaiting approval by the mayor, businesses and homeowners will face a $50 fine on the third time that officers respond to a false alarm within the calendar year. The money collected from the fines would pay for safety equipment and training.
The ordinance also includes faulty and false fire alarms.
