KINGSTON, N.Y. — Permits for alarm system owners are now available in Ulster County.
Starting on Jan. 1, it is a violation to have an alarm system that prompts police or first response action without a permit issued by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, the Daily Freeman reports. The permits cost $50.

The new law is aimed at reducing false alarms. Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum said his office fields 1,200 false alarms each year.
Those not holding a permit will be given a warning for their offense. The second offense will prompt a $100 fine and $200 for each incident after.
Meanwhile, permit holders will not face a penalty for their first two false alarms. Their third will result in a $50 fine, followed by $200 each time thereafter.
