Family Uses Newly-Installed Home Surveillance System to Catch Package Thieves

Two suspects were arrested after security cameras alerted the family and they notified police.

SALEM, Ore. — Thieves stealing packages off front porches of homes is a growing concern around the holidays with the rising popularity of online shopping.

Abdullah Ibrahim was so fed up after three instances where his family’s packages were stolen that he decided enough was enough. He installed a home video surveillance system and lights, according to a FOX 12 Oregon report, and his wife Ashlee left out a box of clothes to try to lure in the criminals.

It worked.

The security cameras captured footage of a woman taking the box of clothes — one that was supposed to be donated — from the family’s front porch. She loaded the box into a wagon and left as another person was seen trailing the woman while pushing a shopping cart.

“They were pushing a cart, so it looks like they were actually going and looking at every single house and seeing if there’s something available for them,” Ibrahim said.

The surveillance footage alerted Ibrahim of the activity on his porch and he called 911. Marion County deputies tracked down the suspects within minutes and arrested 40-year-old Eva Duke and 26-year-old Paige Butler on charges of theft and trespassing.

Ibrahim was surprised with the outcome.

“I got to say I was very excited and very surprised how … I’m not even in my house and they managed to catch these thieves and bring justice to us,” he said.
