Fatal Stabbing in Quiet Connecticut Town Has Resident Calling for Security Cameras on Road

Melissa Millan, 54, was fatally stabbed more than a year ago while running and no arrests have been made in the case.

SIMSBURY, Conn. — A tragic murder has residents here trying to fundraise money for the installation of security cameras on the road where the attack occurred.

Don Massey, a resident of Simsbury, is spearheading the fundraising campaign through his newly formed nonprofit, Iron Horse Security Project Inc. The proposal is being finely-tuned and fundraising is projected to start next month, according to a Hartford Courant report.

The push for video surveillance of the road comes more than a year after 54-year-old Melissa Millan was fatally stabbed on Nov. 20, 2014 while running on the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail. No arrests have been made in the case.

“It troubled me greatly that this town, which is known for a fairly comfortable and safe lifestyle, could be assaulted by this tragic truth,” said Massey, who stated he has no connection to the victim or her family.

The preliminary proposal was generally supported when it was presented to the board of selectmen earlier in December. The proposal calls for roughly 90 security cameras on the road and they would not be monitored live. The cameras would be installed on light poles.

“If it is a deterrent, we have the capacity to make Iron Horse Boulevard safe again,” Massey said.

Millan was the senior vice president of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co.
