February 2009 Tech Talk Online Q & A

Published: January 31, 2009

Q: I am trying to connect my laptop directly to a DVR through the network connection. I am not getting any response. Any suggestions?

A: One suggestion would be to look at the type of network cable you are using. Many times when you want to connect two devices through a direct network cable connection you need to either use a computer hub in between or use what is called a null cable. This cable has the transmit and received connections reversed so the transmit pin on one device is the received pin on the other device.

Q: As a service manager I have had a few embarrassing instances where a tech has disconnected a critical wire, such as to a siren, RJ31X phone line, or just simply left an equipment box unsecured and left the premises. Do you have any tips on how I can help avoid this in the future?

A: Well, first the techs should be doing a final local and reporting test when ever they work on a system. A good tip is to make sure an item such as an open cabinet gets secured before the tech leaves is to have the tech attach his vehicle key to the device that is be unsecured. He will have to go back and revisit the device before leaving in his truck.
