Federal Government to Fund Security Cameras for New York Bodegas

NEW YORK
Published: November 30, 2004

The federal government will help fund security systems for hundreds of bodega stores in New York City. Sen. Charles Schumer has spearheaded an effort that has resulted in the establishment of “Operation Safe Store” that will provide $400,000 toward the purchase of security cameras for 300 independent grocery stores in New York.

Schumer told radio station WINS that the stores are located in high-crime neighborhoods and often stay open late at night, providing easy targets for robbers.

Systems will include cameras and monitors that allow clerks to see the entire store while remaining behind the counter, as well as silent alarms.
