The Port of Oakland has received $1.2 million from a
federal grant supplied by the Department of Homeland
Security. The grant will be used to install a security
camera system capable of beaming live images of roadways
and entrances to a secure computer. Security fencing will
also be built around port electrical substations.
Throughout the maritime area, 14 cameras will be placed to help respond to emergencies and lend another pair of eyes on the fourth-largest container port in the nation. “We are trying to take as much advantage of technology as we can,” says Ray Boyle, Port of Oakland maritime security chief.
The port has won four grants, including this one, in the maritime division. The port has received about
$8 million of the $80 million it has requested.
